1. The Shallow Breathing Epidemic

It is now common for people living in highly developed countries to spend 95% of their time indoors with most waking hours spent sitting and staring at a screen.

The combination of this sedentary lifestyle, bad posture, high stress levels and highly-processed foods in our diet leads to chronic patterns of shallow breathing.

3. The Physiology of Stress And Relaxation

Today's hyperconnected world fuelled by stress, stimulants and screens can lead to an imbalanced nervous system where the sympathetic nervous system (the "fight, flight or freeze" response) is over-activated.

Over time, this can lead to problems with depression, anxiety and insomnia because our autonomic nervous system gets stuck in sympathetic dominance (the stress response) and we aren't able to recharge effectively through full activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" response).

Conscious breathing practices allow us to slow the wandering mind down, focus our attention on what's most important in life and fully activate our parasympathetic relaxation response so we can relax, recharge and sleep deeply.

We will cover foundational practices of breath awareness, rhythmic breathing, embodied breathing and immersive awareness.

About The Instructor

Kyle Pearce first discovered Mindfulness Training when he took Jon Kabat-Zinn's program while struggling with depression and seasonal affective disorder while studying at University of British Columbia.

Mindfulness became an important part of his daily practice and he has spent time meditating for long periods of time in Buddhist monasteries in Canada and South East Asia.

He was inspired by learning from animistic forest monks in Thailand to build a daily ritual of eco-mindfulness that combined mindful awareness, conscious breathing and nature connection practices.

He taught his first forest meditation workshop in 2016 in Vancouver's Stanley Park and since then he has regularly lead workshops and retreats teaching ecotherapy, foraging and eco-mindfulness practices.

He has been practicing meditation for twenty years and teaching visualization, breathwork and meditation to busy tech and creative professionals for the last 7 years through his do-it-yourself education company DIY Genius.
