We’re excited to share this new documentary Giant Tree Hunters about the efforts to find and protect Canada’s largest trees and grandest old-growth temperate rainforests on Vancouver Island.
It follows the activities of Ancient Forest Alliance campaigners TJ Watt and Ken Wu; forest ecologists Dr. Andy MacKinnon and Dr. Sally Aitken of the BC Big Tree Registry; and tree climbers Matthew Beatty and Damien Carre of Expedition Old Growth.
The film was made by Nootka St. Films, who are based out of Victoria.
If you want to go big tree hunting yourself in the Port Renfrew area, here are a few of the best spots mentioned in the documentary:
1. Avatar Grove – Massive Western Red Cedars with huge twisted and contorted burls.
2. Red Creek Fir – The world’s largest Douglas Fir tree.
3. San Juan Spruce – One of the world’s largest Sitka Spruce trees by volume.
4. Big Lonely Doug – A towering Douglas Fir standing alone in the middle of a clearcut block.
